The making of...
Afvalhelden (recycle heroes)

storyline

Afvalhelden (recycle heroes) is a project developed by Uiten Creative Educatie and CC Bureau voor Beeldende Educatie to promote recycling and environmental consciousness by raising awareness of recycling strategies and, on a fun note, create super hero costumes from waste.

This video is an introduction to the wonderful world of recycling and its puzzling questions such as 'in which container do I throw my crisps package?' and informs about avoiding waste. It is furthermore a celebration of student art and their amazing waste costumes and posters to promote environmental consciousness.

art direction

Maaike, owner of Uiten Creatieve Educatie approached me to create both an explainer video about recycling, targeted at middle/high school children, and a showcase for their work. During the workshops wonderful lino's were designed and made by the children and we used that artwork for the animation.

Those lino's informed the whole look and feel of the video and, when I had to create extra content, I created assets in Photoshop and Illustrator that fitted in seamlessly. I blended carefully detailed animations with cut-out style sequences to give it a simplistic look as if the lino's had just come to life.

Rather than showing off the superhero outfits one by one,  I created a catwalk with characters in costumes jumping in and out of their posters to add interest.

Working exclusively in AfterEffects I animated the recycle hero using my beloved  Rubberhose rigging system. Sounds were provided by Soundsnap and the underlying track is Sping Quartet by Tiny Music (premiumbeat.com).

Hope you've enjoyed it.
